I was reading an online introduction to linguistics and discovered the

following argument used to demonstrate the existence of traces:

    Which candidate does Vicki wanna vote for?

    *Which candidate does Vicki wanna win?

with the conclusion that a trace is required to explain why the second

sentence is unacceptable

    Which candidate does [Vicki wants to vote for t]?

    Which candidate does [Vicki wants t to win]?

The problem being that the second sentence is not unacceptable in my

speech.  And I assume that this is not an individual quirk of my own.

We had a lot of this kind of nonsense forty or fifty years ago (Paul

Postel being a notable offender). But this 2013!  Why hasn’t anybody

called the Chomskians on this one?

Mistakes like this are, perhaps, excusable in technical journals – but

not in popular introductions.  According to online accounts this

example, originally advanced for a different reason by Lakoff, was

applied to traces by Chomsky and, separately, Lightfoot in 1976.

That’s a long time ago.

I googled "wanna trace" and got few hits on my question and no

evidence that anyone doubts that the second sentence is unacceptable.

How widespreadly is this construction really unacceptable?  And how

common is my making it acceptable?

I was reading an online introduction to linguistics and discovered the

following argument used to demonstrate the existence of traces:

    Which candidate does Vicki wanna vote for?

    *Which candidate does Vicki wanna win?

with the conclusion that a trace is required to explain why the second

sentence is unacceptable

    Which candidate does [Vicki wants to vote for t]?

    Which candidate does [Vicki wants t to win]?

The problem being that the second sentence is not unacceptable in my

speech.  And I assume that this is not an individual quirk of my own.

We had a lot of this kind of nonsense forty or fifty years ago (Paul

Postel being a notable offender). But this 2013!  Why hasn’t anybody

called the Chomskians on this one?

Mistakes like this are, perhaps, excusable in technical journals – but

not in popular introductions.  According to online accounts this

example, originally advanced for a different reason by Lakoff, was

applied to traces by Chomsky and, separately, Lightfoot in 1976.

That’s a long time ago.

I googled "wanna trace" and got few hits on my question and no

evidence that anyone doubts that the second sentence is unacceptable.

How widespreadly is this construction really unacceptable?  And how

common is my making it acceptable?
