After frustrating experiences with "e", I am writing to ask if anyone
knows of a simple and user-friendly word processor that I can use on my
100-lx.  I do not need anything *quite* as stripped-down as "e" (999
bytes, tamaa.de!);  I think something on the order of 40-100 K would be
quite adequate, but I would like something menu-driven if possible.
Really, I am not at all unhappy with the Memo editor, except that I would
like some sort of simply undo function.

Can anyone suggest a good, reliable program (and where to get a copy)?

This is true for the west of the Netherlands only.  In the east and the south
of the country English is still considered a very foreign language, and people
welcome any attempt to speak Dutch.  I found English a very weird language
when I got it taught in school (I’m from Enschede, which is about as east as
you can get) and heard and saw it no place else.

As someone trying to pick up a language on my own, I’m beginning to notice
something.

It seems that many of the books designed to allow one to teach onesself a
language tend to take a very different approach than those used in language
classes.  The lack of conversational practice and aural examples aside, group
textbooks tend to stress conversation and simple expression (you learn how to
say ‘my name is’ and ‘hello’, then learn what theparts of speech are and that
you’re actually conjugating a verb)

On the other hand, self-teaching books
tend to present themselves more often as grammars, giving all the declensions
and conjugations, then teaching vocaabulary.  In my opinion, this makes it
difficult to apply what you learn from one of these books.

Any thoughts?

Hello dear netters!

Some time ago I read something obout the French orthography set up
as it is today in order to "tell the intelligent men from the stupid
ones". It was about those letters inserted/attached to French words,
that are not spoken (spoken anymore?). The letters were taken from
the corresponding Latin words; people who spoke Latin, too, were con-
sidered ‘more intelligent’ it seems.

I wonder whether this insertion of letters actually took place. English
had *some* letters inserted (e.g. in ‘debt’), but changing the *whole*
orthograpy of French — that seems unlikely to me.

Maybe they just re-introduced an older French writing-system…

I would be delighted if someone would comment on this.

What were the earlier systems like?

Where did the dots come from?

And how are b, t, and th related such that they would have the same symbol
with different numbers of dots?

Why are groups of letters identical except for the dots?  Were what they
came from identical?

know where else I could post it therefore I will try my luck here.

My daughter who works as a secretary got the job of translating  two questions from
French to at least 7 other languages. She managed to do it in English, Spanish, and
German so far. She still needs to do it in Dutch, Italian, Portugeese and Polish.
Could anyone help with any of those last four languages? This would make my
daughter’s boss very happy and may help my daughter to keep her job.

The two questions are as follows:

        Albert, are you dead?
        Why don’t you answer?

I know that this may sound ridiculous, but believe me this is not a joke.
